French Ambassador to Zambia and Malawi visits Jacaranda School
11.27.2012
On 27th November, 2012, Luc Deschamps, the executive director of Jacaranda Foundation, had the pleasure to welcome at Jacaranda School Marie-Annick Bourdin, Ambassador of France to Zambia and Malawi. The day before in Lilongwe, Marie-Annick Bourdin presented her credentials to Her Excellency Mrs Joyce Banda, President of the Republic of Malawi. The French Ambassador then came down to Blantyre for a one-day visit to meet some of the French residents in the area. We were thrilled that the French ambassador took the time to visit Jacaranda School, together with Laurent Brunet, the French Consul in Zambia. French language and culture are an important part of Jacaranda School: our Standard 6, 7, 8 and Form 1 and Form 2 students are learning French; we have a wide array of French books in our library, donated by the former French Cultural Center in Malawi; and since his arrival in Malawi five years ago, Luc Deschamps has been very active in developing a cooperation between French and Malawian cultures. In September 2012, for instance, renowned French children's books author Hervé Tullet spent ten days at Jacaranda.

The French Ambassador came to Jacaranda after school hours, but many of our children living nearby came to welcome her: "Bienvenue, Madame l'Ambassadrice!"
Chipiliro Chikwekwe, a Form 3 student at Jacaranda, surprised the French Ambassador by offering her earings he had just made out of... Jacaranda flowers!
